Mediterranean Mussels Flavor Profile

Mediterranean Mussels are larger and meatier than Blue Mussels. They have full meats which fill the shell. The flavor is delicate yet complex, with a buttery texture.

Mediterranean Mussel Description

Mediterranean Mussels are the largest commercial mussel.  They have shells which are usually blue-black but sometimes are brown.  The color does not indicate any difference in quality or flavor.  They are called Mediterranean because the region the species is originally from.

Range & Habitat

Today, Mediterranean Mussels are grown on the west coast from Washington to California, on the eastern Atlantic coast, southern African coast, and are still raised in the Mediterranean as well.  Most Mediterranean Mussels are rope suspended which causes them to grow without touching bottom and are therefore free of grit.
