Lau Kingdom 8″ Damascus Chef’s Knife Review Summary

Star Rating: 4.9 Stars
Overall Rating: Superior Quality Professional Knife

Joe Bartlett aka The Knife Nerd helped me do another knife review. We would definitely recommend this knife. It performed well on each of our tests. It made easy work of the shallot, had no problem with the thickness or denseness of the onion, sliced the basil chiffonade cleanly without any tearing or bruising, and it truly shined when we took it to the carrot! It went through the carrot exceptionally well.

Beyond its practical usefulness, the LauKingdom Chef Knife is also a very aesthetically designed knife, especially the Damascus layering which has a beautiful, intricate design. And the knife is comfortable in the hand with a smooth transition over the bolster between blade and handle.

One small note: on the Amazon page it states that this is a “heavy knife.” I’d disagree and would say that the knife is light when compared to similar knives. But, that lightness did not affect its performance.

Possible Actual Rating Test Notes
5 4 Carrot-Lengthwise Test  Performed almost perfectly on the carrot pull test.
5 5 Shallot Test  Did an excellent job on the shallot.
5 5 Onion Test  No issues going through the thickness of the onion.
3 3 Tomato Test  Very smooth! Only one long stroke to get each slice. Very impressive.
3 3 Basil Test  Clean, sharp cuts with no bruising, tears, or shredding.
3 3 Paper Test  Did a good job on the paper. The second cut didn’t slice all the way through due to Joe running out of knife, not due to knife edge quality.
5 4 Comfortable Handle  The handle seemed slightly awkward in my hand, like it wanted to roll left or right. Did not affect performance…just my subjective impression.
Quality Materials
5  4 Steel Quality  We would like more details about the composition. We gave it a “4” simple due to not knowing the quality beyond what we can perceive.
3  3 Durability  Knife seems to be very durable for its class.
3  2 Handle Quality   The manufacturer’s description of “wood handle” does not tell us much about what the handle is made of nor indicate it’s durability.
Quality Construction/Design
4  3 Overall Construction Quality  Overall construction is good, with the minor exception of the slightly imperfect fit of the end-cap.
3  3 Design, Engraving, End-cap, etc  This is a beautiful knife with an engraved end-cap and very aesthetic appearance. The Damascus layers have an intricately elegant look.
General Ratings
5  3 High-end Knife? $139 or $17.50/inch
5  5 Utility  The knife performed very well on all the normal chef knife tests.
7  5 Overall Impression  We would highly recommend this knife. It has a very keen edge, performs very well, is elegantly designed, and would work well in a professional kitchen.
