Glidden Point Oyster Flavor Profile Characteristics
Glidden Point Oysters are a premium quality, choice grade oyster cultivated in the frigid Damariscotta River Estuary, Maine at a depth of about 40 feet where the oysters are fed by naturally occurring phytoplankton. The Damariscotta River estuary is recognized as one of the cleanest in the Northeast, with fresh ocean water from the briny Atlantic flowing in twice daily.
Glidden Points are grown in several lease sites along the Damariscotta River estuary including the waters of Bristol, S.Bristol, Edgecomb and Newcastle. They are harvested at various sizes, including 2” - 3” cocktail oysters, 3”- 4” selects, and 5” - 8” grillers. When they reach market size, they are harvested by divers or small drags towed behind boats.
Glidden Point is the site of ancient shell middens which Native Indians and early settlers left behind after feasting upon the wild Damariscotta River oysters which once inhabited this region. It is after this historical treasure which Glidden Point Oysters are named.
Glidden Point Oysters grow slowly in these frigid waters and this slow grow-out gives Glidden Points rock-hard shells with deep cups, firm plump meats, and a crisp, complex flavor which is both briny and sweet.
